Summer: lake days

Long evenings by the water, mangoes from the market, a swim before dinner. How an off‑grid home stays cool in June.

June in the Pothohar is honest about itself: it is hot. The difference at Zen Valley is how you meet it. Thick earth walls, deep verandas facing away from the afternoon sun, and inner courtyards that pull cool air through the house mean the home does most of the work before any fan is switched on.

Power when you need it most

Summer is also when the solar arrays earn their keep. On a clear June day a household array is full by mid‑morning; the batteries carry the evening. There is no load‑shedding in the valley because there is no grid to shed. The pool filter, the fridge, the fans through the night: all of it from the roof.

The lake

By late afternoon the lake is where everyone is. Children learn to swim here. Adults sit on the dam wall with tea. The learning centre keeps its doors open late, and most of the valley's decisions get made on that wall between six and eight in the evening.

A swim before dinner is not a luxury. It is what the lake is for.

The garden

Summer beds are generous: tomatoes, okra, bitter gourd, cucumbers, mint that needs cutting back weekly. The rice patch is flooded and green. Goats spend the middle of the day in the shade of the orchard and come home on their own when the light goes long.

Come and see the land.

The valley is best understood standing in it. Message us and we will arrange a visit.
