Building with earth:
modern comfort, traditional walls

Thick walls, deep verandas, inner courtyards and hidden systems. How a Zen Valley home carries two memories.

5 min readBy Zen Valley

The homes at Zen Valley are built the way the Pothohar always built: thick walls of earth and stone, deep verandas, and an inner courtyard that pulls air through the house. Inside, they are modern: open plan, generous light, solar and water systems hidden away, a pool in the courtyard.

Why earth

Earth and stone walls have thermal mass. They take the day's heat slowly and release it at night, which is why traditional homes in this region were cool in June and warm in January long before air conditioning. Combined with deep eaves and the right orientation, they cut a home's energy need by more than half, and that is what lets a rooftop array run the whole house.

Modern where it matters

Kitchens, bathrooms, glazing and services are contemporary. Large openings face the view and the morning; small ones face the afternoon sun. Every home is built within the ten‑marla cap, with a private pool, covered parking and its own boundary.

The comfort of now. The wisdom of walls that have worked here for centuries.

Two ways to get there

Buy the plot and build in your own time to the valley's design guidelines, or let Advice Associates deliver a turnkey home: designed, built, planted and handed over with the keys. Details are on the plots and homes page.
